Tales of the Demonic wars - part 6 - the third Demonic invasion

I walked down the dark and dusty corridors of the ancient archives. The place had been closed after the fourth invasion, and I would surely be executed if I were caught. We knew it was a matter of time before the knowledge contained here was destroyed: there would be no second chance.

I stopped regularly to decipher the dates of the ancient volumes, until I found what I needed. The title read “723 – The third invasion, a recounting of the shadow war”

As I read, I remembered what I had learned about Demons during my time at the Academy of magic. They were magical creatures living in a different plane, created out of pure magical energy by the Demon lords. In ancient times, contacts with our world were scarce. A few mortals made demonic pacts with them in exchange of souls, most often their own. The demonic Soul Hunters were created to materialize in our world and recover the souls that were promised to their masters. They were created to blend among us, and yet, they are fearsome in combat, as they are masters of both steel and magic.

Around the year 300 of our calendar, the magic from their world started leaking into ours for a reason we ignore, and Demons started “dying”, for lack of a more appropriate word. This started the demonic invasions, as they attempted to recover their lost magic.

I was looking for information about a particular Soul Huntress: Eleirana, who opened the giant portal of the fourth invasion, had also participated in the third invasion. I quickly browsed through the pages until I found what I was looking for.

Eleirana was sent into our world to hunt for the soul of the Champion of the Ritualists, Meylena. She proved to be a difficult target, as she was protected by Arlen and the Slave Traders. Eleirana weaved a powerful illusion around her, disguising as a common slave. At the same time, other Soul Hunters infiltrated the outposts of the Traders and opened portals towards the demonic world. The portals were weaker than expected, which allowed the Traders and the Ritualists to close them before powerful demons could go through them. This is why this invasion was nicknamed the shadow war: officially, nothing happened, as only the Traders were hit. Arlen and Meylena coordinated the defense from their headquarters. They never expected to be struck from inside their greatest stronghold. Eleirana ambushed Meylena in the corridors of the ancient fortress and struck before she could react. As Meylena expired, Eleirana pronounced the final words of the Soul Hunters: “The pact is fulfilled”, and carried her soul into the demonic world.

“Interested in me? I'm flattered”

Eleirana was behind me, her claws in her hands. Before I could raise mental barriers, she was in my head and knew everything about our plans.

She smiled and disappeared through a portal.
